Local Knowledge: Gordon's Homes

Ku-ring-gai's administrative centre sits here, and the suburb carries that civic weight alongside a village strip of shops running along the Pacific Highway. Big, elegant houses from the 1890s through to 1915, mostly built in the ornate turn-of-the-century style the district is famous for, still dominate the larger blocks.

Between them sit mid-century infill houses and, nearer the shops and the highway, a growing run of newer apartments. McIntosh Street is where the heritage-listed Federation stock sits, and those boards are rarely the ones the house needs now.

Renovation is close to constant on the older stock. Extending a house or reconfiguring its layout regularly means a full rewire to modern standards.

A kitchen extension or an added second storey almost always means opening up the wiring, not just bolting a couple of extra points onto a circuit that was never sized to carry them.

We spend a lot of time on exactly that: taking a board and a wiring layout sized for a household from more than a century ago, and bringing it up to what a modern family actually runs, without gutting what makes the house worth keeping. Our residential electrical work covers the detail.

The retail centre on the Pacific Highway anchors most of the newer apartment stock nearby. Strata buildings carry their own electrical scope: shared switchboards, common-area lighting and metering that a single house never has to think about, and we treat that as a separate job, not a smaller version of a house rewire.

The Faults Gordon Homes Report Most

Two other issues turn up almost as often as rewires on the boards we open here.

  • Old switchboard fuses: period and mid-century houses commonly still run on original ceramic fuses, well short of the circuit protection a modern home needs. See switchboard upgrades.
  • Missing safety switches: plenty of never-renovated houses here simply never had an RCD safety switch fitted on all circuits, which is a straightforward but important fix. See switchboard upgrades.

Add a pool, a home office or a bank of new appliances to either setup and a switchboard upgrade usually becomes the first job on the list, not an afterthought.

Renovation demand has held up strongly this year, and it's this same pairing of issues that keeps surfacing once the old plaster comes off a wall.

Why Gordon Homes Choose Us

St Ives stays home turf, and a stop here just adds one more leg to the same weekly round, not a special trip out.

We hold a lifetime workmanship guarantee on every job, and we work to AS/NZS 3000 on every board we open. Gordon and St Ives answer to the same council, Ku-ring-gai.

Turning up already knowing the local streets beats arriving cold, and it's part of why bookings here tend to run smoothly.

Between the civic buildings and the Federation streetscape, this suburb doesn't fit a single mould, and neither does the electrical work it generates. We treat a heritage rewire and a strata upgrade as genuinely different jobs, not variations on the same template.

Emergency

Emergency Help, Minutes from Gordon

Winters on this elevated, leafy ridge run cooler and damper than the coast, and that's when heaters and reverse-cycle systems get switched on hardest, exactly when an older board is most likely to complain.

If a circuit won't stay reset, or you catch a burning smell anywhere near the board, don't wait it out. Turn off what you safely can at the switchboard and call.

Call straight away for:

  • Any burning smell near the switchboard or a wall point
  • Scorch marks or visible sparking around a switch or meter box
  • Whole-house flickering or dimming that isn't the globe
  • A circuit that trips again the moment it's reset
  • Power gone to one part of the house while the rest of the street is fine

We keep a genuine emergency moving fast, and being on the same regular loop means we're rarely starting from a cold run.

Common questions

Gordon Electrician FAQs

Quick answers to the questions that come up most.

Are you licensed for work anywhere in NSW?

Yes. Our licence covers work across NSW, and every job still gets a Certificate of Compliance so you've got the paperwork on file, big job or small.

How quickly can you fit in a job in Gordon?

Often same or next day for a standard booking, faster again if it's urgent. This part of Ku-ring-gai is on our schedule most weeks, so slotting a job in rarely means a long wait.

Do old fuse boards cause safety switch trips in homes here?

Often it's the opposite problem. Plenty of the older houses here never had RCD protection fitted, just the original ceramic fuses. There isn't a safety switch there to trip in the first place. What fixes it is a proper board upgrade, not a hunt for a faulty appliance.

Besides here, which other suburbs are on your books?

St Ives, Pymble, Turramurra, Belrose and Killara are all part of the same coverage area. If you're close by but unsure, give us a call and we'll confirm.

Do I get a Certificate of Compliance?

Yes, on every job that needs one. It's filed and handed to you as proof the work meets AS/NZS 3000, useful if you ever renovate again or sell.

Do you do small jobs?

Yes. Whether it's one dead point or an entire board, you get the same upfront pricing and the same guarantee behind the work. No job is too small to book properly.
